Signing with Baby Hands
Thursday, 17 December 2009

Baby sign language is rapidly becoming very popular with many of today's new parents. This early method of communication has so much potential. Signing provides a way for parents and children to communicate with each other long before the child is capable of speaking. Baby Hands signing works because the child can control some of their hand movements long before they can do much with their vocal chords. Meeting Clea from Baby Hands was wonderful, she has a warm and friendly personality and the workshop was very educational and fun. Here is some of what I've learned from the Baby Hands Workshop.

Read more after the Jump.

The way you teach your child to sign is very simple. Just use any sign along with the verbal word every time you say it. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Keep using the same sign every single time you say the word. I found this a bit hard, mostly because I wish I had more time at home with Camryn to teach her all the signs faster, but in a matter of 5 days she already mastered a couple of signs, her favourite sign is “ Plane ” . Every time she hears a plane, the finger starts doing the signing motion. When I show her the cat sign she “mews” it is super cute. Another favourite of Camryn is the sign for “gone”. I can definitely see that she's learning to associate the signs with the actual object.. Our least favourite sign is dog, I just can not get the connection between the sign and the word but I will surely ask Clea when we start with our Sign and Rhyme classes.

I found all the signs where easy for Camryn and easy to learn for myself as well. We are really having fun learning the signs. Repetition is the key to quicker learning, as long as you keep it fun, The signs they use are proper SA signs as used by the deaf community, Clea said that we should not be concerned if our babies aren’t using the signs perfectly, it’s not about perfection, it’s about communication. I am trying to add more words as we go along but I think soon little Camryn and this Mommy will be pros.

At the class we received a wonderful pack which included: A DVD with over 160 South African Signs, A comprehensive manual which teaches you how to sign, A Baby Hands Wallchart which I think is awesome for Camryn’s caregivers,  a Baby Hands Bag and a Baby Hands pen. I found the dvd very interesting and helpful for remembering and going over the fine details.. Baby Hands is a fun and enlighting experience for both the parent and the child and we are having loads of fun.
